Skin scan offer from MediCare could prove a potential lifesaver

IN Northern Ireland, skin cancer is a serious health issue which has significantly increased in recent years. Today it accounts for 28% of cancer patients.

Skin cancer cases have credible evidence linking to the increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from sunlight or the use of artificial sources such as sunbed’s.

Medicare Pharmacy Group’s Broughshane Pharmacy will roll out their sun awareness campaign next week, from Monday, May 23, when staff will be on hand to provide expert information and advice on sun protection with added promotions on their extensive range of sunscreens and sunglasses.

Sunburn occurs when the skin has been damaged by over exposure to UV light. A pigment called melanin is produced to absorb UV radiation which protects the skin from burning easily but does not protect it from the harmful effects such as premature aging and skin cancer. Skin becoming darker is a sign that the skin is being damaged by UV rays.

Ultraviolet radiation is split into UVA and UVB ranges. UVB rays burn the topmost layer of skin, causing sunburn and cell damage that can lead to cancerous changes. UVA rays don’t burn, but penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for cell damage that contributes to ageing and skin cancer.

Just one blistering sunburn can double the likelihood of developing malignant melanoma (skin cancer). Importantly, careful sun protection during childhood can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.

Research has shown that around 90% of people are unsure about the correct amount of sunscreen to use in order to fully protect their skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. Many are confused about what SPF (sun protection factor) levels mean. SPF30 does not offer double the protection of an SPF15!

An SPF15 sunscreen filters out apx.93% of UVB radiation, the type that’s mostly responsible for sunburn, whilst an SPF30 sunscreen filters out apx.96%, offering just three per cent more protection. Sunscreens with a high SPF factor should not lead to you staying in the sun for longer, since you will still be exposed to the equally dangerous UVA rays.
