Special evening for Bernie at Flowerfield

FLOWERFIELD Arts Centre is delighted to celebrate the creative achievement of Portstewart author Bernie McGill (pictured), with a special reading on Wednesday, September 29 at 7.30pm to accompany the launch of her debut novel, The Butterfly Cabinet, published by Headline.

In addition to developing her reputation as an emerging writing talent, Bernie has been the creative writing tutor at Flowerfield for many years, and has led dozens of students to new heights in their work.

Collecting generous praise from critics, Bernie’s novel explores the consequences of revealing a secret from the past.

When Maddie McGlade, a former nanny, receives a letter from Anna, the last of her charges and now a married woman, she realises that the time has come to unburden herself of a secret that has gnawed at her for over seventy years.

It is the story of the last day in the life of Charlotte Ormond, the four-year-old only daughter of the big house where Maddie was employed as a young girl.

Bernie has pursued a diverse career in the arts, as a theatre company manager, as a workshop facilitator, and most recently as a playwright.

Her short stories have been shortlisted for numerous awards, and in 2008 her story ‘Sleepwalkers’ won the Zoetrope All-Story Short Fiction Contest. The Butterfly Cabinet is her first novel.
