St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival

Derry-Londonderry is preparing itself for the St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival celebrations when a A Kaleidoscope of Culture will be brought together for a family friendly and inclusive range of events to celebrate March 17.

The St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival continues to be a celebratory event in the city’s events calendar bringing thousands of people to the city centre to view the spectacular colour and vibrancy of the community Carnival parade and enjoy the city’s diversity.

This year’s Carnival is entitled the Curious Carnival with participants from all over the city taking part while the Guildhall Square will be a hive of activity with free, family fun entertainment as part of the Mayor’s Family Dun Day.

All in all, it promises to be a fantastic family occasion for everyone to enjoy. A key part of the celebrations is the bringing together of community groups and voluntary organizations along with carnival groups, tradition and contemporary dance groups to showcase local talent and bring colour and fun to the city streets.

Among the highlights are a Mayoral Fun Day event from 12 – 5pm in Guildhall Square with music and entertainment for all the family.

A community marquee will be set up at the Lisnagelvin Pitches in Altnagelvin to host two days of events including a science fair, community bingo, magical shows and Irish and Scottish music and dance performances.

Also incorporated within this year’s programme are details of events taking place in the run up to and during St Patrick’s Day, including the National Trust’s Leprechaun Hunt in Bishop Street the Burning Man Temple, traditional music at Aras Colmcille and a family fun day event at An Culturlann.

This year’s Carnival Parade will commence on its usual route leaving Derry City Council Car Park at 2.30pm travelling towards the city along the Queen’s Quay over Boating Club Lane towards the Strand Road, and returning to the Council car park.
