SURFING: Al tames the Giant

AL Mennie has succeeded where Fingal failed by conquering the Giant’s Causeway.

The local big wave surfer is fast becoming a legend in his own right.

And he added to his repatuation last Thursday as the North Coast bore the brunt of some strong winds.

Mennie along with Devon surfers Lyndon Wake and Andrew Cotton took on the huge swell at the causeway.

“The funny thing is this wave has been breaking right under our noses for years at Northern Ireland’s premier tourist spot!” said Mennie.

“It’s one of those mythical places people often mention, wondering if there are waves out here.”

“Every now and again a huge one would come through and drain the reef below sea level. It was very hard to predict so we decided to tow it to be on the safe side. “Some of the waves on the main peak go top to bottom and then run all the way through. We honestly had to draw on all of our experience as the bay is small and with huge white-water on the inside it trapped us a few times.

“I picked Lyndon up after two waves and had to run all the way to the rocky shoreline to try and get away from it enough to turn round and punch through. It was a very intense day more so because of the situations we found ourselves in than the waves.”
