The art of learning at Dromore Nursery

LOCAL award-winning artist Michelle Stephens has been helping the children of Dromore Nursery School get ready for their upcoming annual art exhibition.

Staff and pupils recently welcomed their special guest, who led the children in exploring textiles during a two-day outreach programme.

Said principal, Sharon Beattie, “The children were thrilled and delighted with the real-life loom Michelle brought into the school; they all had the opportunity to weave a section into the material, which will be displayed at their art exhibition on Saturday, March 24.

“They also learned about material, yarns and the production of cloth and had the opportunity to create material for themselves, using their own individual looms.”

Inspired by Dromore Nursery staff member Joanne Baxter, the initiative proved so successful that the school plans to invite Michelle back again, during summer term, to explore natural materials, through the medium of art, in the outdoor classroom.

Michelle, meanwhile, was recently named ‘Young Artist of the Year’ by Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee.

“This is a great achievement,” said Mrs. Beattie, “and it has been a privilege for the children to share in her passion for textiles.

“Michelle has an easy manner with the children and they responded to her immediately; within a short time she had them enthused and excited about working on the loom.

“Many of them can now talk knowledgeably about making material, weaving, using a shuttle and using a loom.

“Nothing inspires children more than working alongside passionate and talented artists.”
