Social support, advice and the chance to gain some qualifications were some of the key reasons young people say they attend The Den, a ‘Drop-in Centre’ for youth in the Bushmills area.

With the help of youth workers, these young teens recently organised an Open Day to celebrate their achievements and showcase the different programmes they have been involved in.

Seven young people were presented with a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering at the event hosted by the Bushmills’ Children and Young People’s Locality Planning Group (LPG).

Derwyn Brewster, Chair of the Bushmills LPG praised their achievements and highlighted the importance of having these facilities in the area.

“The Den was set up over 10 years ago and has successfully motivated and inspired young people in Bushmills to try new activities. I wish the project further success in 2015.”

Some comments from local teenagers who have attended The Den: “The programmes we have done with the Den this year have been great, we have decorated The Den making it our own, learnt about the local history and also had a go at water activities on a residential.

“The Den not only allows us to catch up with friends but also gives us a contact point for help and support whenever we need it as the youth workers listen to our problems and offer advice.”
