Annie at The Venue

Londonderry Musical Society, which is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary during the UK City of Culture year, is marking the occasion in style by staging one of the world’s favourite musicals, ‘Annie’ at The Venue 2013 on April 12 and 13.

If the turnout for the recent Annie Guinness World Record attempt at Ebrington Square is anything to go by, the appetite for the story of the little orphan girl who touches the heart of all those she meets, is greater than ever.

This production by the renowned local amateur society of the timeless rags to riches tale of hope features a talented cast, which includes no fewer than 40 local children. The production’s brilliantly memorable score includes classics such as ‘Maybe’, ‘It’s A Hard Knock Life’ and ‘Tomorrow’.

The team of Deigh Reid, Venessa Chapman and Jim Goodman, whose production of ‘The King and I’ last year won two awards from the prestigious Association of Irish Musical Societies and took third place in the Best Show category, have combined again for this year’s show.

Director Deigh Reid said: “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to perform in The Venue during such a special year for our city and are excited about showing audiences, both local and from further afield, just how much home-grown talent is on offer here.”

Playing the title role of orphan Annie is 14 year old Lauryn Mulholland from Buncrana, a member of the LMS cast for three years. A pupil of Foyle School of Speech and Drama and the McGinley School of Music, 2013 has already been a busy year for Lauryn as she was runner-up in the RTE All Ireland School Talent Search.

Tickets for Annie are available from the Culture Company Box Office at www.millenniumforum.co.uk or by phoning 02871 264455. Tickets are priced at £10 and £12 and special group and family rates are available.

There will be evening performances at 7.30pm at The Venue 2013 on Friday and Saturday April 12 and 13 and a matinee performance on Saturday April 13 at 2pm.
