From Macklin to Friel

From Macklin to Friel is a ‘dramatic double bill’ celebrating the literary lineage of Inishowen, which will be staged in the waterside theatre on October 30.

Antelope Productions present ‘Macklin: Method & Madness’ by Gary Jermyn and Michael James Ford.

Storyline: It is Valentine’s Day, 1941. In the basement of the BBC a radio play is about to be broadcast celebrating the life of Charles Mackin, the legendary 18th Century actor from Inishowen. Outside, London is being ravaged by The Blitz. As the bomb fall, Macklin’s equally stormy life story unfolds, dogged by controversy including a backstage killing.

For the second part of the double bill, Balor Reps present ‘The London Vertigo’ by Brian Friel, adapted from The True-Born Irishman by Charles Macklin.

In this storyline Mrs O’Doherty travels to London for the coronation of King George III.

So impressed is she by the sights and sounds of the metropolis that upon her return she affects a ‘proper’ English accent and refers to herself as Mrs Diggerty. In tow is Count Mushroom, a suitor as ardent as he is conceited.

It is anyone’s guess if her husband can restore her to her senses and cure her of ‘The London Vertigo’.

‘From Macklin to Friel’ will be at The Waterside Theatre on October 30. Tickets are £12 and can be booked by telephoning the Box Office on 028 7131 4000 or book online at www.watersidetheatre.com.
