Gravity proves to be something of a let down

Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) and Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) are among a team of astronauts sent to repair a damaged NASA satellite in new movie Gravity.

When a nearby Russian satellite engages a missile strike, it causes a cloud of debris hurtling toward them, damaging the satellite and their ship in the process.

The two, connected via harness, are seperated, sending Stone to drift away from the wreckage. When Kowalski retrieves her, their audio link to NASA is severed, leaving them both stranded in space.

The first 20 minutes of Gravity are shot as one fluid take - its like watching a play, albeit one set in outer space. Sandra Bullock deserves praise for her mainly isolated performance.

Gravity is quite an original premise and is a good film, but its just good – not the revolutionary motion picture most are heralding it as. Its all built on suspense (will they get home or not).

Across an hour and a half, that suspense could only be maintained for so long, resulting in very slow periods of general floating about.

Gravity was a disappointment. Though I was taken with the ending, for the last 20 minutes or so, I’d all but given up on it.
