A north coast musical theatre group is marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a moving musical production called ‘Come From Away’.

Come From Away is a powerful and uplifting musical which tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 airline passengers who found themselves unexpectedly grounded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, in the wake of 9/11, and the extraordinary kindness that followed.

Portrush Music Society will stage Come From Away at The Playhouse Portrush from May 28 to June 6.

Known for its fast-paced storytelling, touching music, and impactful message, Come From Away has become a global sensation. Now, Portrush Music Society is bringing this moving production to local audiences, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience filled with heart, humour, and hope.

Director Kerry Kane shared her excitement about the production: “This show is unlike anything we’ve done before. It’s a story about humanity at its best; about strangers becoming friends and compassion in the face of uncertainty.

"Our cast has embraced that spirit completely, and it’s been incredible to watch the story come to life in rehearsals.”

Featuring a talented local cast and a live band, the production highlights the society’s commitment to high quality musical theatre.

The dynamic nature of the show means that the small main cast of 12 performers take on multiple roles, seamlessly transitioning between characters and perspectives telling the stories of both the stranded passengers and those who took them in.

Musical Director, Terry Cloughley emphasised the unique musical challenges and rewards of the show: “The score of Come From Away is vibrant and demanding, blending folk, rock, and traditional influences.

"The music really drives the story forward, demanding precision, energy, and real emotional connection from both the cast and musicians that’s been an exciting challenge for everyone involved. Our musicians and cast have worked tirelessly to capture that energy and authenticity.”

Portrush Music Society has built a strong reputation for excellence on stage, with previous award-winning runs including My Fair Lady, Beauty and the Beast, and The Phantom of the Opera taking place in Coleraine Leisure Centre.

Each production has showcased the society’s creative direction, talented performers, and memorable storytelling, earning praise from audiences and adjudicators alike. This year, the society is delighted to be moving to a more intimate venue in The Playhouse, and continuing to bring exceptional theatre to the North Coast.

Audiences can expect a dynamic staging that immerses them in the events of those extraordinary days, as well as moments of genuine warmth and humour that balance the show’s emotional depth. From toe-tapping ensemble numbers to poignant solos, Come From Away offers a theatrical journey that resonates long after the final curtain.

Kerry Kane added: “At its core, this show reminds us of the power of community. We hope audiences leave feeling uplifted and inspired; it’s a story we all need right now.”

Performances will take place at The Playhouse Portrush from May 28 to June 6 (nine performances in total with two matinees), with tickets expected to be in high demand. Early booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Come From Away is proudly sponsored by the Bayview Hotel in Portballintrae and the society is very grateful to them for their continued support of the arts.
