In a category which includes American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club and Captain Phillips, I believe that Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave will be awarded Best Picture. McQueen is also my choice for the Best Director win.

Matthew McConaughey is my pick to win Best Actor. His phenomenal performance as AIDS afflicted hustler Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club eclipsed his fellow nominees.

I expect Cate Blanchett, who last weekend won the BAFTA for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, to have repeat success in the Best Actress category.

Jared Leto, who was an utterly convincing transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club and was fantastic in his role, is my pick to win Best Supporting Actor.

In my review of American Hustle, I predicted Jennifer Lawrence to win Best Supporting Actress and I stand by that prediction. Lawrence, perhaps the best young actor today, is as natural as any actor I’ve ever seen.

The 86th Academy Awards ceremony is on this Sunday night from 1.30am on Sky Movies Oscars.
