This year’s top tips for Halloween

When it comes to unnecessary and lacklustre sequels, the horror genre is the worse offender. However, some great films can often be found buried among the re-imaginings and cash ins. Here are three horror sequels/remakes to check out.

Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers (1993) is personally noteworthy as the earliest horror film I remember seeing as a child. One of many adaptations of Jack Tinney’s The Body Snatchers, director Ferrara’s version moves the events from the city to an Army base where plant like aliens replicate the townsfolk. A clever film, darkly satirical with creepy imagery.

Return of the Living Dead 3 (1993), the third of John Russo’s Living Dead series, replaces the original’s slapstick humour with gore and terror. When teenager Julie is killed in a motorbike wreck her boyfriend Curt uses Trioxin, a chemical which resurrects the dead, and unknowingly unleashes a zombie plague on their town. Zombie fans will enjoy.

From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter (2000) is a prequel, set in the old west, featuring some of the vampires from the first film. Lesser known than its predecessor, its a violently entertaining companion piece that deserves more recognition.
