Twin Peaks back on the horizon with DVD release

David Lynch’s surreal drama series Twin Peaks was a phenomenon when it hit television in 1990. The question ‘who killed Laura Palmer’ was on everyone’s lips and remains one of TV’s enduring conundrums.

Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery, released to mark the 25th anniversary of its 1989 narrative, combines the series with Lynch’s 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and over 90 minutes of deleted, never before seen footage.

Fire Walk With Me is a divisive film; some hail it as a misunderstood masterpiece while others feel its an interminable mess, lacking the series’ standard (I belong to the latter category). It follows Laura Palmer in the days leading to her murder and the investigation into a similar killing. On the surface, Laura is the high school prom queen and popular contributor to the community, while in reality she’s a troubled teen with a turbulent private life. Due to his reluctance to take part, Kyle McLaughlin’s iconic Agent Dale Cooper is relegated to a brief cameo. Sheryl Lee reprises her role from the series, but Laura Palmer proves to be a more interesting ‘MacGuffin’ than a lead.
