Trumpet and narration from Linley Hamilton as Miles Davis classic gets an airing

ONE of the landmark albums of the 20th century – in any genre – is revisited next Tuesday (April 27) at Flowerfield Arts Centre, as some of Ireland's finest jazz musicians perform the Miles Davis classic Kind of Blue in its entirety.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the album, which featured compositions such as ‘So What?’, ‘Freddie Freeloader’ and ‘Blues in Green’, tracks which have become standards in the repertoire of modern jazz, this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear the whole album performed live.

The show will include narration by BBC Radio Ulster’s Linley Hamilton, who will also play the classic Miles Davis parts during the show. Linley’s narration will set the scene by giving accounts of Miles’ life and work, in the months leading up to and following the release of this groundbreaking recording.

The programme will also include an original work written for this event by bandleader John Leighton. This visit to Flowerfield follows on the huge success of the show at 2009’s City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival.

The musicians performing on this tour are: Linley Hamilton on trumpet and narration; Tom Harrison on alto saxophone; Jeremy Lyons on tenor saxophone; John Leighton on piano; Damien Evans on bass and David Lyttle on drums.

Tickets for the show are priced at 10, with a concession rate of 8, and they’re available from reception at Flowerfield Arts Centre. You can also call and book your tickets by phone on (028) 7083 1400.
