Turn your old skateboard into a guitar at Flowerfield workshop

IF YOU'VE ever wondered what to do with an old skateboard deck – here's a suggestion: turn it into a guitar!

Flowerfield is offering a unique one-day workshop on Saturday, February 27, which gives participants the chance to make a six-string electric guitar out of an old skateboard deck – complete with a pick-up and a jack socket.

Not only that, but the workshop will also feature old cassette radio players turned into practice amplifiers…

The man behind the workshop is creative recycling genius Maurice Cairnduff.

Maurice has built a wonderful reputation for taking rejected bits and pieces and turning them into creative tools – he and his wife Irene run the Really Rubbish Orchestra, which allows children to perform musical pieces using all kinds of junk – plastic bottles, shopping bags and bicycle wheels.

For this workshop – which can take only ten people – Maurice will be guiding participants through the process that will see an old skateboard deck fitted with a bridge, nut, six tuners, a set of strings, a pick-up and a jack socket, and turned into a slide guitar, ready for performance.

The workshop will utilise all kinds of skills – mechanical, musical, electronics, performance and teamwork, and is aimed at 11 to 18 year olds. The fee for the workshop is only 10, and there are a limited number of places available. The workshop runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

The day will finish with a brief performance that will see all of the students tuning playing a short piece together on their guitars.

There are still some places available - if you’d like to book a place on the workshop, please get in touch with Flowerfield Arts Centre on (028) 7083 1400.
