Una runner-up in Best Supporting Actress

A Portrush Music Society member has been attending an all-Ireland musical theatre awards ceremony after being nominated for her performance in Sister Act the Musical.

Una Culkin was nominated as Best Supporting Actress in the AIMS (Association of Irish Music Societies) annual awards ceremony which judges each of the 80-plus amateur musical groups the length and breadth of Ireland.

Times journalist Una was nominated for her performance as Mother Superior in Portrush Music Society’s recent ten-night sell-out performance of Sister Act in the Riverside Theatre in Coleraine.

Una attended the glittering awards ceremony in the INEC conference centre in Killarney last week where she came runner-up in the category.

Speaking after the ceremony, Una said: “I was absolutely delighted to have been nominated in the AIMS awards.

“It is a fantastic experience to attend the awards with 1,000 amateurs actors and singers from all over Ireland.

“The part of Mother Superior was just incredible to play and, as soon as Sister Act was announced as our musical last year, I knew that was the part I wanted to play.

“The icing on the cake of a ten-night sell-out of Sister Act was to be nominated as Best Supporting Actress.

“I have been nominated four times by AIMS, the first time was back in 2000 for Best Comedienne in Ballywillan Drama Group’s Oklahoma, so it’s nice to still be around!” she joked.
