Earlier this year 7000 nominations throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Islands were received. 1400 causes in 350 communities were then short listed for the award.

The Cairns group is now in a battle with three other groups to win the top award of £3000.

To win the award means getting votes via text, email, Linkedin and Twitter.

They are asking everyone to support their good work by texting vote FWL to 61119 and to follow the link https://lly-cf.co.uk/FWL to vote online.

You can vote on all of these but can only vote once on each giving potentially 4 votes altogether, ie one text, one Twitter, one Linkedin and one email.

You can also vote in branches of Lloyds Bank.

The group has done excellent work in their community in the last two years through creating 19 allotments, a community garden, kids’ allotments and three poly-tunnels. They’ve also done cross community work, ran a safe driving project, held an Open Day and a Halloween event which were all very successful projects.

The group is also big into conservation and has planted new hedging around their allotments area, are working with the Glens Red Squirrel Group and are also currently working on an Art project for the area.

They also got involved with painting a bus shelter in honor of the Giro d’Italia which managed to get itself photographed in a national newspaper. They also entered a Float into the Heart of the Glens Festival opening parade this year which got them a joint first prize.

A group spokesperson commented: “We were delighted when we got the word back that we had been short listed for the award. It’s this sort of thing that gives us much deserved recognition for what we do within our community. Sometimes the work is hard but can be very rewarding when you see what you put into it is reaping rewards for all.

“Hopefully this vote will also be successful so we can continue to do more good work.”

To continue their success, they want people to show their support by voting for them. If successful in the vote they hope to create an orchard and an outdoor seating area for the community to share. This would be a good addition to the already flourishing allotments, where community members meet and socialise.
