What is your favourite thing to explore, see or do in Limavady?

A walk through the Roe Valley Country Park on a warm summer’s evening? Visiting a new exhibition at the Arts and Cultural Centre? Fishing the Roe for salmon on a lazy Sunday afternoon or a jam packed weekend at the Jazz and Blues or Stendhal festival? Limavady Borough Council wants to know what you look forward to most in your own patch.

The scheme will publicly showcase the top 400 answers as part of the Limavady 400 celebrations... with prizes on offer for the best responses. Local business providers, school children, community and voluntary sector groups and the general public here are asked to contribute to the project. “We want to make 2013 a special year in which everyone has a chance to join in and be part of the programme of celebrations,” said Council’s Culture, Arts and Tourism Manager Eileen Magee.

“We want the people of Limavady to take ownership of this landmark year.” It is 400 years since Newtown Limavady was granted a Town Charter, which gave the town governance, the right to have Members of Parliament and to hold a market. The town can lay claim to being true home of the Londonderry Air – best known throughout the world as ‘Danny Boy’.

Mrs Magee continued: “We have a calendar packed with celebrations, but we need you – the community who live and work here - to help us in this project. History, music, art, business, community and sport have all contributed to making Limavady a great place to live, work and visit.

“This year gives us the ideal opportunity to celebrate our beautiful Borough and everything it offers to the rest of the world.”

Rich in natural beauty and steeped in history and legend, Limavady is the ideal location to explore the rolling green hills of the Sperrins, the mythical past of the Causeway Coast and the busy commerce of the North West. “Whether its quality accommodation, adrenaline filled activities, enlightenment through magical myths and legends, tranquil journeys through spectacular landscape or simply fun-filled adventures for all the family, Limavady has the answer. Limavady 400 branding gives us the opportunity to show off our incredible tourism potential,” said Mrs Magee.

“Our people are one of our strongest attributes. Visitors to the Borough are always assured of a warm welcome and a great stay.

“This is just one of the many exciting projects in the planning. We hope to have the world famous Broighter Gold - a hoard of gold artefacts from the Iron Age of the 1st century BC that were found in 1896 by Tom Nicholl on local farmland - come home for an exhibition in 2013. Plans are in motion to set a bold world record as part of the Limavady 400 celebrations. A full timetable of events will be launched soon.”
