A business degree on your doorstep

Caroline, mother of five daughters and working full-time, was delighted with her success.

“Like many part-time students I wondered if I could balance study with work and family commitments and furthermore was concerned that I may be older than the majority of other students,” she said.

“Many of these fears proved unfounded; part-time study spreads the course over a longer period of time, making it more manageable if, like me, you have to juggle work, family and social life. In my case - an undergraduate degree normally taking three years full-time took four-and-a-half years.

“The longer period allows for greater flexibility and less intensity in terms of time and workload. My family gained more independence, I prioritised household tasks, and received support and interest from a variety of sources, making, for me part-time study a positive experience.”

A degree in Business is widely recognised in all sectors of employment, as evidenced by the fact that local company Armstrong Medical not only sponsors the prize for top Business graduate but also recommends it to their staff. The degree is an ideal way to enhance career prospects.

Caroline’s experience has been a positive one: “People on the course were from all ages, backgrounds and abilities and as class sizes were generally smaller than on the full-time degree, friendships were easily made as we chatted over coffee, formed study groups, discussed presentations, class tests and essays and generally understood the pressures, nerves and worries common to all. This support and camaraderie helped put things into perspective, and was vital for achieving work-life balance.”

The part-time degree consists of a total of eighteen taught modules that can be taken at a maximum rate of five per year. However, exemptions may be granted for either relevant academic and professional study or business experience. This means that you can enter the course at a variety of levels depending on your current qualifications.

“The course has been a resounding success since it was established at Coleraine,” commented Course Director, Chris McLean.

“It allows local people, from a wide variety of backgrounds, to study in the evenings for an honours degree in Business. Classes are held in the evenings to suit those in full-time employment and students can choose their own pace of study. The course is excellent value for money and students can even apply for government support to cover the costs.
