My business is called Lisa Larkham Photography. I specialise in the photography of all things family – engagement, weddings, bump, newborn, baby, toddler, graduation. I have a passion for photography and I have built a reputation for a relaxed and friendly style. My photo shoots are done in your own home, which makes it less stressful for yourself, but I can also be booked for photo shoots on location. If you want to see some of my work, check out my facebook page: www.facebook.com/LisaLarkhamPhotography.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up doing what you are doing now?

I took a keen interest in art at a very young age. This persisted into my adult life where, on finishing my foundation year in Art and Design, I continued to study for a degree in Photography at the University of Ulster in Belfast. This absolutely was the best experience of my life and I’m so thankful I did it.

Since graduation I have been gradually building up a client list and direction as to where I want to take my vision. I have worked with some fascinating people and I hope that this continues and grows over the years.

Did you always want to run your own enterprise?

Yes, I have always been driven and always wanted to help others.

What skills/qualifications do you require for the role?

Artistic and creative ability. Technical ability with a wide range of photographic equipment and technology

A keen eye for detail. Being able to relate to a client and offer pose instruction is essential, and so are good listening skills to understand what the customer is seeking in the finished product. When photographing major events, such as a wedding, I must know how to deal with large crowds and co-ordinate posing an entire wedding party. Patience is a plus when working with young children. Good time management skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.

Has your business been affected by the current recession?

Yes, the work may be there but the competition for photography in my area is quite fierce, However people will still be getting married, having children, graduating, and all of the other great moments we like to have captured by a photographer.

What were the biggest challenges you faced when setting up and what support did you get?

I had a lot of help from a few friends when buying my equipment. They also gave me advice when I needed it. Carrickfergus Enterprise also helped me out creating my business plan and helped me with setting up my business.

What three tips could you offer those considering starting their own business?

Contact someone for help, such as Carrickfergus Enterprise who offers a friendly and free business course.

Talk to friends/family about your ideas, and get as much feedback as you.
You can’t just expect to sit back and let the work come to you. You need to get your name out there and have a professional looking portfolio to let people know what you can do.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

I have worked with some fascinating people so far and I hope that this continues and grows over the next 12 months, where I also hope to expand the coverage to other areas of Northern Ireland. I also plan on developing my product range.

What do you get up to in your free time?
