Cost of dog licence increases by 150%

COLERAINE Borough Council is advising local dog owners that from Monday, 3rd October, the fee for a single dog licence will increase from £5 to £12.50.

The change in fee has been introduced as part of a review of dog control legislation in Northern Ireland, designed to promote responsible dog ownership.

Further changes include the requirement for dogs to be micro-chipped from April 2012 and an increase in fixed penalty fines up to £80 for offences such as straying, fouling and failing to have a valid dog licence

Concessions will be available for the over 65’s, those on income related benefits and neutered dogs. A block licence fee will now be £32 with no reduced rate.

The increase in fees reflects the high costs of providing a dog control service.

This is made more costly by the actions of irresponsible dog owners through enforcement and cleansing costs.

All dog owners are urged to be responsible for their dogs and to ensure compliance under the new legislation to minimise prosecutions and fixed penalties issued.
