Disappointment as bank to go ahead with branch closure

Upper Bann MLA John O’Dowd met with bank officials last week over the proposed closure.

The Sinn Fein MLA said: “We once again urged Bank of Ireland management not to proceed with their decision to close until at least the Covid 19 pandemic has passed and a new sense of normality returns.

“While undoubtedly how people use a bank has changed, many still rely on the local branch which also acts as an economic stimulator in the town.

“However it is clear the decision to close will be implemented and the branch will be lost to the town and its customers.

“While it is hugely disappointing the closure will go ahead, however I welcome the fact no staff will face compulsory redundancy.

“I asked officials about the needs of elderly customers and they stated they will be engaging directly with all their customers and setting out alternative arrangements including the use of the post office.

“I also urged that the building in the town centre is not left vacant and the Bank moves quickly to ensure it is repurposed to allow for alternative use.”
