First Trust bank to shut in city centre

THE First Trust Bank in Londonderry city centre is to close in November it has been confirmed.

AIB, the bank’s parent company. announced in late July that following a review of its retail operations a number of branches across Ireland were to close.

At that time, Denis O’Callaghan, Head of AIB Branch Banking said the closures were a necessary response to customer needs.

“We have seen a very significant change in the way our customers wish to do their banking. As a result of this, many of our branches have seen a large decline in customer visits,” he said.

Now, in a letter to public representatives, the bank has said the Shipquay Street branch will cease operations on November 2.

“After a comprehensive review of branch usage, we have had to make the difficult decision to close our branch in Shipquay Street from close of business on 2 November 2012.

“Customer accounts will be moved to our Meadowbank branch and we will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience,” the letter from the bank’s head of networks Joseph McGowan says.

He further writes :”I would like to personally assure you that the Bank remains committed to providing a quality service to all our customers.”
