Foster expresses disappointment as BMI Baby stops Belfast flights

Tourism Minister Arlene Foster has expressed her disappointment after it was announced that BMI Baby will stop flying from George Best Belfast City Airport in June.

Arlene Foster said: “While the London Heathrow route remains unaffected, the decision by International Airlines Group (IAG) to withdraw BMI Baby flights from George Best Belfast City Airport is disappointing news.

“Understandably, passengers already booked on a BMI Baby flight will be very concerned and wondering what their rights are. I would like to reassure that if they are unable to make suitable alternative arrangements with BMI Baby, they are entitled to a full refund.

“Also, passengers who have booked a package holiday that includes a flight with the airline are protected under the ATOL scheme and should contact their travel agent. If anyone is experiencing difficulties they can find out more about their rights by contacting the Consumer Council on 0800 121 6022, or by emailing [email protected].”

The Minister continued: “This decision by IAG is also deeply disappointing for the individual workers who may face redundancy. I am aware that officials from the Department for Employment and Learning have already made contact with the Human Resources Department of BMI to offer support under the Redundancy Advice Service. This service offers a package of free support tailored to meet the needs of the employer and their employees facing redundancy.

“I have been speaking to the Chief Executive of Belfast City Airport, Brian Ambrose this morning, and he is confident that airline operators will pick up on the opportunities that exist, as has happened in the past, when other carriers have pulled out. We will continue to work together to attract new airlines and service to Northern Ireland.”
