Schools in the borough were invited to enter the competition, which is provided by Business in the Community, to bid for funding to implement an eco-project.

A group of year 11 Geography students at Ulidia Integrated College took up the challenge, and progressed a proposal for an energy app.

The team worked together with ISL Waste Management to create their business plan for the app which when completed will be available to download for free.

Ulidia has a close relationship with the company, which has been built up over the years by working together to achieve ‘zero waste’ status.

As part of the research stage for the plan, the team was given a guided tour of the ISL factory in Mallusk.

In November past, the Ulidia pupils were at Kilroot Power Station to pitch their business plan to a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panel, who questioned the pupils and examined their ideas closely.

They were awarded £4,000 in funding to implement their project, which they are now working towards.

The Geography department at Ulidia Integrated College extended congratulations to the young people involved for their enthusiasm.

Mrs Patterson, head of Geography, said: “This team of four students have worked extremely hard, demonstrating enthusiasm, and a mature outlook at all stages of this process, they are a pleasure to work with.”
