International Law Conference

The international conference of leading lawyers that took place in Derry-Londonderry over the weekend has been declared a ‘major success’. Lawyers attended from across Europe and from North America and Hong Kong.

“The conference was a major success,” said Philip Gilliland, managing partner of Caldwell & Robinson, which hosted the event. “Delegates were very impressed not only by the quality of the speakers and their knowledge, but also with what a wonderful city Derry is. They enjoyed much of the best that Derry has to offer, thanks to the efforts of the City Hotel, Brown’s Restaurant, Custom House Restaurant, Cafe del Mondo, the Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Link Academy, and also to the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, who opened the conference.

“In the conference sessions we considered two of the most topical subjects for lawyers who operate with an international or cross-border horizon - people’s choices in where they divorce and where they file for bankruptcy. Both of these social trends might be regarded as unfortunate symptoms of our time. We hope that another conference topic may also become a more common contemporary story, that of professionals who locate their support services in Northern Ireland.

“Derry has proved, once again, that it can compete with any small city in the world as an ideal choice for an important conference. Happily our delegates are now returning home across the globe to spread that message.”
