K&G McAtamney Scoops Two Major Awards

Ballymena butchers K&G McAtamney have been named the best in Northern Ireland after proving they’re a cut above the rest in the annual ‘Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards 2011’.

The family butcher’s impressed the judges from awards’ organiser Meat Trades Journal to scoop the prestigious prize at the annual awards ceremony at The Landmark Hotel in London. The judges were particularly impressed with the butcher’s “huge range of fresh meats, value added products, cooked meats, ready to eat items and stir-fries”, all housed within a “large, spacious shop”. They also remarked on the range of 50 different meals, while accompaniments from a portfolio of nearly 100 are displayed along an entire wall of the Greenvale Street shop. They added: “A gleaming serve-over snakes round two other walls to present the main meats while a central hub acts as a sandwich bar serving sandwiches, hot baguettes, paninis and salads. “This fantastic business is a member of the Northern Ireland Elite Butchers Association and one of a limited number in the province participating in a Slimming Solutions campaign, organised by local celebrity nutritionist, Jenny Bristow. These meals and many others are prepared in spacious kitchens above the shop”. Meat Trades Journal Editor Ed Bedington said: “The Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards are renowned as the premier awards for the UK butchery sector, recognising excellence in craft butchery. By winning this award, K&G McAtamney enters an exclusive group that represents the crème de la crème of British butchery.” This latest accolade comes just four short weeks after K&G McAtamney was crowned ‘Deli of the Year’ at the Neighbourhood Retailer Awards 2011, Northern Ireland’s most prestigious grocery industry award. The top independent retailers in their field went head to head at the Neighbourhood Retailer Awards, each vying for one of the 15 specialist category awards.

Hosted by Ulster television presenter, Tina Campbell, they rewarded excellence in the retail sector and stores from across Northern Ireland, large and small, were winners with K&G McAtamney, Ballymena, picking up the prestigious Deli of the Year. Explaining the significance of the awards, Bill Penton, Managing Publisher, Neighbourhood Retailer, said: “They celebrate and reward grocery-retailing excellence throughout Northern Ireland. This year in particular, entrants from towns, villages and cities throughout the province have competed against one another on a level playing field to distinguish themselves as the best at what they do”.
