MLA Robinson hails Open announcement as exciting

EAST Londonderry MLA George Robinson has described the announcement that the Irish Open will be played at Royal Portrush this July as “exciting and very welcome”.

“Thanks to the success of our local golfers, we have the opportunity to show the world that we not only have the best golfers in the world, but we have the best links courses in the world,” said Mr Robinson.

“I have no doubt that the recent successes of Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke have played an important part in bringing the Irish Open to Royal Portrush. We now have the opportunity to showcase Northern Ireland golf courses to the world and there is the opportunity to attract thousands of golf fans not only for the Irish Open but for future years.

“The tournament will bring a much needed boost to the tourist economy in the area, and will guarantee worldwide exposure for Northern Ireland golf, which we must capitalise on.

“I would hope that in a few years we would see The Open played at Royal Portrush - an accolade the club, and all those who have been part of its success, would thoroughly deserve. I look forward to seeing some of the world’s best golfers taking on Royal Portrush competitively this summer and in many future years,” concluded Ald Robinson.
