Glanbia Cheese, based in Magheralin near Lurgan, Co Armagh, is to shed 14 jobs in an ‘efficiency’ drive.

The firm, which employs 186 people, specialises in the manufacture of mozzarella cheese.

The cuts are to be made in the cheese shredding section.

The company has facilities in NI, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

A spokesperson for Glanbia Cheese said: “Glanbia Cheese has been engaged in a consultation with employees at its mozzarella production facility in Magheralin, Co Armagh, as part of an overall effort to find efficiencies across the business.

“As a result of the consultation, 10 permanent roles on the cheese shredding line in Magheralin are being made redundant. Three contract roles and one agency role are also impacted. There are no compulsory redundancies and redeployment within the business is being offered where possible.

“The cheese shredding line in Magheralin is a small part of the plant’s overall operation. The volumes currently being packed at the site are being re-allocated to Glanbia Cheese’s other production facilities in Llangefni, Wales and Portlaoise, Ireland. This will allow Magheralin to focus on its core activity of mozzarella cheese manufacture.

“A total of 186 people are employed in Magheralin. It will continue to be a key manufacturing site for Glanbia Cheese into the future.”

Ulster Unionist Cllr Kyle Savage said he was saddened to hear of the job losses at Glanbia in Magheralin.

He said: “Glanbia is a major employer in the agri-food sector within the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council area.

“We, as Council, need to be supportive and engaging more with our business sector to help support and respond to the needs of our businesses.

“The Agri food sector is worth 33.4% of the ABCs economy and I am glad that council have finally recognised this with the setting up of the Agri-food strategy working group. It is the only council in NI to do this.”
