Londonderry Chamber of Commerce last week held a very successful In Camera event with Minister Sammy Wilson, Department of Finance & Personnel

The Finance Minister today assured business leaders in the North West of his continued determination to promote economic growth in the Province.

The Chamber also had a private audience with the minister, where they asked him to update them on progress regarding proposals to assist local retail and other businesses, accelerate the city’s regeneration, expand higher education, improve transport links and reduce Corporation Tax.

Sinead McLaughlin, chief executive of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted that Sammy Wilson is in Derry to meet our members and other local businesses. These are difficult times and these require serious discussions to take place about boosting the local economy, relieving the rates burden and creating more jobs. As Sammy Wilson would expect, we will lobby him hard on behalf of the business community of the city and region.”

Minister Wilson said: “Rebalancing the Northern Ireland economy is the principal goal in the Programme for Government and I, and my Executive colleagues, are fully committed to that. I believe that this, alongside the Economic Strategy, will put us firmly on the road to economic recovery. However, we cannot deliver this alone – others need to play their part including the business community and the financial institutions to assist in bringing Northern Ireland out of these tough financial times.”

Nick McCafferty, NI Regional Manager for Bibby Financial Services, commented,

“We welcome the Finance Minister’s commitment to promote economic growth and we firmly believe the best way forward is with a collaborative approach. We must continue to work together to encourage growth of a sustainable economy with investment in the future and creation of opportunities. We recognise that local government is working to provide vital funding for local businesses and we are well positioned to help North West businesses survive and grow with a funding facility of £50m to facilitate the increased demand for our facilities amongst SMEs.”
