Paisley on Lignite

IN line with his election commitment to continue to oppose the opening of a lignite mine in Ballymoney North Antrim MP Ian Paisley Junior spoke at Westminster in support of the Open cast Mining bill that proposes to restrict the opening of all such mines if they are in any proximity to homes or rural communities.

He said: “I took the opportunity to inform Parliament of how a lignite mine would destroy vast swathes of Co Antrim and how it is essential to oppose the opening of such a mine.

“I am pleased that other members of parliament supported this call and indeed identified similar concerns regarding open cast mining in their constituencies. It is now up to government to identify how it intends to deal with this matter. But I will continue to ensure North Antrim is protected from such a mine.”
