Jazzi Gifts is a ‘pop up boutique’ based Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the DeCourcy Centre Carrickfergus. I sell ladies handbags, purses, scarves and other accessories. We also sell men’s wallets and scarves on occasions. Jazzi Jewels sells all of the above and jewellery usually out and about at craft events (www.facebook.com/jazzigifts www.facebook.com/jazzijewelsni).

Tell us a little about yourself and how you ended up doing what you are doing now?

I worked in education for 20 years until I decided I wanted a complete career change. Business has always been in my family as my grandfather Samuel Simms was a local businessman and also my father James Simms ran a very successful family newsagents in the town. With the support of my family and husband I made the change to start my own business in ladies accessories and it has been the best decision of my career.

Did you always want to run your own enterprise?

Yes, I had considered taking over my father’s business and making it third generation, but unfortunately it wasn’t the right time personally in my life, while the last few years have been more suitable for starting my own business.

What skills/qualifications do you require for the role?

Business and fashion sense and people skills are definitely required for my business.

Has your business been affected by the current recession?

A lot of people ask me why I don’t open a shop. I feel because of the economic climate it is not the right time for this type of venture. ‘Pop up’ and also out and about keeps the overheads down and gives my customers better value for money on their gifts and jewellery.

What were the biggest challenges you faced when setting up and what support did you get?

Driving my business every day, keeping my ideas fresh and up to date with fashion trends and customer requests.

I have had amazing support from family and friends from the start, especially the ladies. Also, Carrickfergus Enterprise has helped with business set up and continuous business support and seminars.

What three tips could you offer those considering starting their own business?

Research your product and your market carefully.

Have belief in yourself and your products.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions no matter how trivial you may think they are.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

To enjoy my second Christmas in the DeCourcy Centre and New Year. To keep my loyal customer base in the DeCourcy Centre with new ladies accessories arriving with the change of seasons. A new jewellery line for Jazzi Jewels before Mother’s Day 2015.

What do you get up to in your free time?

I spend a lot of time with my family and I enjoy the north coast where we spend time during the summer months. My husband and I enjoy travelling, socialising and spending time with friends.

If you could swap places with anyone who would it be and why?

I would swap with my mum, Jean. She is a fantastic mother and the best role model a daughter could ever have.
