£135k road scheme to start Monday

The resurfacing scheme will extend for around 1,025metres on the eastbound carriageway from the Foyle Bridge to Caw Roundabout.

Making the announcement, Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said: “The scheme will greatly improve the safety, strength and surface quality of the carriageway of this important route.”

Whilst the Department’s resource budget for activities such as routine maintenance is severely reduced, funding for this scheme is from the capital budget for major projects and new road schemes which is less affected by the current pressures.

To ensure the safety of both road users and the contractors staff undertaking the work, a contraflow system will be in operation from 9.30 am on Monday, March 9 until 6pm on Friday, March 13.

Additionally a full closure will then take effect for vehicles travelling from Culmore Roundabout to Caw Roundabout from 8am on Saturday, March 14, to 6pm on Sunday, March 15. Traffic travelling in the opposite direction, (Caw Roundabout to Culmore Roundabout) will be unaffected. A diversionary route will be signed via Culmore Road, Strand Road, Queens Quay, Foyle Expressway, Craigavon Bridge, King Street and Limavady Road.

As with all improvements of this type, scheduled dates are subject to favourable weather conditions.

TransportNI has carefully programmed the works operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience to the public, however, drivers should expect delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the area.
