Rail track enhancement underway at Castlerock

TRANSLINK NI Railways is advising residents living close to Castlerock Train Station and railway line that essential engineering work will take place from mid-February until mid-May.

The work will involve the replacement of ballast (stones) along the track between Castlerock and Derry-Londonderry.

It marks the start of Translink’s major Track Safety Improvement Works programme to maintain safety standards and overall performance on the railway line.

Frank Moore, Translink NI Railways Route Manager, says that for safety reasons work will need to be carried out at night.

“This project will help ensure that our overall Londonderry line track enhancement project is completed on time for rail services to operate as planned during the 2013 City of Culture celebrations,” he said.

“We would ask the public to be vigilant during this period as we will be using an engineering train along this section of the railway line.

“The train will be turned at Castlerock Station around 4am, Tuesday to Saturday, requiring the use of the level crossing road barrier situated there.

“We are contacting local residents directly to advise them of this project and will be working hard to keep any noise to a minimum,” said Frank.
