Recruitment night to be held at the town’s fire station

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has launched a major recruitment for community (part-time) firefighters in Lurgan Fire Station, alongside 12 other fire stations across Northern Ireland.

For the first time ever, NIFRS is recruiting for a new daytime contract when firefighters must be available for at least 40 hours per week, normally between 8am and 6pm from Monday to Friday.

NIFRS wants to recruit people who can respond to Lurgan Fire Station within five minutes of being alerted by pager. Community firefighters help protect the local community and respond to emergency incidents such as fires and road traffic collisions. They will also respond to other specialist service calls, including chemical spills, collapsed buildings, and other types of rescues.

John ALlen, NIFRS Southern Area Commander, explains: “NIFRS could not operate without our community firefighters. It is an extremely rewarding and interesting job. Community firefighters are paid a retaining fee, emergency call out payments, and a payment to attend a weekly drill night of two hours per week in the evening. Community firefighters are trained to the highest standards and take part in 12 days’ training each year, to ensure we have the most highly skilled firefighters to help protect our local communities.”
