Roadworks welcomed at rural thoroughfare

LONG awaited roadworks at Derryadd have been welcomed after intense lobbying by political representatives and businesses.

SDLP Cllr Declan McAlinden said he was delighted Roads Service is to begin resurfacing part of the Ardmore Road.

He said the road has been in a severe state of disrepair and there had been a number of accidents including some lorries which had left the road.

Though a minor road, it is a busy thoroughfare as it is the main access to Emersons - a major employer in the district.

A spokesperson for Roads Service said there would be a temporary closure of the Ardmore Road, Craigavon, Route C160.

The road closed on Monday and is expected to remain close until Sunday, September 2.

The spokesperson said: “Traffic is being diverted via Ardmore Road, Derrytrasna Lane and B2 Derrytrasna Road. The closure is to facilitate carriageway reconstruction and bitmac resurfacing.

“Roads Service received a number of requests from local businesses and representatives to consider resurfacing each side of a drainage culvert at Pickerings Hill to improve the approach for motorists and drivers of heavy vehicles in particular.

“While it would have been cost prohibitive to carry the improvements in isolation, Roads Service has now scheduled the work to be included with ongoing resurfacing at a nearby site on Ardmore Road.

“The work at Pickerings Hill will be completed early in September.”
