Site of former Portstewart dance hall which hosted Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers on market for £1.6m

A plot of land which sits in the shadow of one of Northern Ireland’s most instantly recognisable schools is on the market for £1.6m.

The site at 22 The Crescent, Portstewart, is situated beside Dominican College – formerly O’Hara’s Castle – which perches on the edge of cliffs in the north coast resort.

On the market for an asking price of £1,600,000 with estate agency McAfee Properties, the site is described as enjoying “uninterrupted, panoramic views across the sea and coastline, stretching beyond to the full length of the Promenade”.

The site was previously occupied by St Joseph’s Hall which was used by Dominican as a PE hall and art department.

St Joseph’s Hall, formerly known as the Palais de Dance, the Top Hat and the Strand Ballroom, was knocked down in April 2025.

The former dance hall had hosted top stars like The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Engelbert Humperdinck.

More recently, the exterior of the building was given a new lease of life after it was painted with a mural of Portstewart’s legendary musician Henry McCullough of Wings and Joe Cocker fame.

McAfee Properties said of the site: “Set in an enviable position at the heart of the town, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a site that combines breathtaking views with the convenience of a central location.

"The site is just a short walk away from the beach, shops, restaurants, and local amenities. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a prominent site with development potential.”
