Sunday car park charges “aid traffic flow”

THE Department of the Environment has responded to criticism from Coleraine Borough Council that it was penalising church goers by charging for Sunday parking in the run up to Christmas.

In a written response to the local authority and the particular criticisms of Councillor William McCandless at last month,s Council meeting, Divisional Roads Manager, Deidre Mackle said the decision to introduce Sunday charging for the four weeks prior to Christmas was to “help control traffic movements” around the town.

“The two barrier-controlled car parks in Coleraine, The Mall and Abbey Street, are manned on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. This has been in place for some time,” she explained.

“Both are manned from 13:00 hrs with charging starting at 13:30 hrs. This has generally been successful as it gives sufficient time for those who use the car parks when attending services to exit before charging commences.

She added: “These arrangements were communicated to the Coleraine Town Partnership Ltd.”
