Teena shows leadership skills

STUDENT Teena Foster is one of the first graduates from the Northern Regional College’s new leadership and management Centre, Acumen.

She has been recognised as the top achiever on the ILM Level 3 course. Speaking at the presentation Teena said she joined Nicholson Bass at a time when the printing industry is experiencing a ‘perfect storm’ in the form of declining demand, price competition and over capacity.

“Based in the Operations Management Team, my role is diverse, stimulating, challenging and encompasses all areas of the company. My ILM Diploma has undeniably aided my professional and personal growth; I would urge anyone who is in management or has the desire to get into management, to take the first step and enquire which ILM course could form the foundation of their management career.

“The structure, content and delivery are by far, the most interesting and rewarding management qualifications on offer,” Teena said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my ILM tutors, specifically Mrs Rosemary Johnston and Mr Jim Brown for their on-going support, encouragement, belief and teaching methods,” she added.

Mr. Brian Gillespie, Operations Director at Nicholson Bass said “Teena joined the team on January 3 this year as a management trainee.

“She has demonstrated an extremely positive attitude in her early tasks and projects. Huge credit to Teena for this “can-do” proactive approach to her role, the ILM Management Diploma has obviously assisted her on her journey, with some excellent coaching on the core principals of management.

“Specifically she has slipped seamlessly in to a business improvement role within our traditional family owned business. While being sensitive to the long standing legacy of a quality printing firm Teena has used every opportunity to ‘float’ and implement modern management concepts. Although her initial role has located her within the operations team in a Business Improvement Management role, it is clear that her skill set is not restrictive. Teena is a “rising star” that Nicholson and Bass are delighted to have on board. With any management trainee position the hope is that you recruit the best available, and with Teena we certainly have,” he said.

The NRC is the only College in Northern Ireland offering these diplomas in Management.

The course coordinator, Jim Brown, added: “In a survey this year, approximately 20% of students completing the ILM Level 3 and 5 Diploma had been promoted while attending the course. Also, the majority of the total student group (85%) believed that the ILM course had given them better skills and more confidence.”

The Acumen suite of courses includes Level 3, 5 and 7 Diplomas in Leadership and Management, Primary Care and Health Management and Strategic Leadership. A Foundation Degree in Retailing is also offered.
