The high quality open space has a strong maritime theme throughout and sets a design standard which will hopefully be maintained in all future public and private sector developments in Portrush.

Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley said, “The Station Square scheme looks very impressive and will give a further impetus to the growing momentum of positive change within Portrush.

“For most visitors Station Square is the main gateway to Portrush and the new scheme sets the standard and the quality of welcome visitors expect from the premier tourist resort in Northern Ireland”.

The project is currently under construction. Following comprehensive consultation and a full open tendering process, Council selected F.P. McCann Ltd. as the main contractor.

The Department for Social Development is providing £1,000,000 of match funding towards the cost of the scheme and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board a further £250,000.

The aim of the scheme is to revitalise Station Square as the main arrival point for visitors to the town centre. The improvements will ensure that the area provides an attractive setting, encouraging visitors to stay longer and increasing economic activity.

It is anticipated the first phase of the new scheme will be completed by 16th March 2012 and the remainder shortly after.

The Station Square area was identified as a priority for public realm improvements in the Portrush Regeneration Strategy launched in 2007.
