Vote for your favourite café, coffee shop or take away

THE Leader Business Awards are back by popular demand and we have launched the voting for the Good Food categories.

This year’s awards will be held in the Belmont Hotel on February 23 where the great and the good of the local business community will gather to celebrate the success of this year’s winners.

The categories will be judged by an independant panel of experts however we are opening both the Best Customer Service and Good Food awards to the public vote.

Today on our website we’re looking at the licensed cafes, coffee shops & takeaways section of the Good Food category. Details of both categories are available in this week’s edition of the Leader.

FOODB 01 - QUAIL’S - QUAIL’S coffee shop in Banbridge has also been nominated by readers in the coffee shop and takeaway category of the Good Food Award in this year’s Business Awards. A popular haunt for lunch or morning coffee, the town centre premises boasts all types of hot food, from homemade quiches and pies, to a gourmet sandwich and salad selection. Owner Joe Quail, whose family has been involved with the local butcher’s shop and delicatessan’s for over 114 years, is delighted at having two of his eateries nominated for their Good Food - the restaurant at the FE McWilliam Gallery has also been shortlisted by our readers. Warm and inviting, Quail’s offers a relaxed, inviting environment for both shoppers and office workers, with its self-service food bar adding to the speedy service.

FOODB 02 - RIVERSIDE TEA ROOMS - FRIENDLY service, value for money, and relaxed environment are just some of the commendations bestowed upon the Riverside Tearooms in Dromore which has been nominated for one of our Good Food Awards. Based in Bridge Street, the tearooms attract regular patrons as well as visitors from further afield - all keen to sample the wide variety of traditional home-cooked meals and attractive deserts dished up by efficient, helpful staff.

FOODB 03 - CAPTAIN COOKS - ALMOST an institution in Banbridge, Captain Cook’s hot food bar and restaurant has been serving the Banbridge public for over 20 years. Tastes may have changed, but the quality of food and enthusiasm of staff has remained the same, with the famous chicken burger still made on the premises to a secret recipe which has remained unchanged over the years. But, in keeping with a move to healthy options, the hot food bar - nominated in the coffee shops and takeaways category of the Good Food Award - now serves wraps and salads in addition to a variety of pizzas and paninnis, filled sods and burgers. A range of meal deals, kids meals and special promotions are also a regular part of the service.

FOODB 04 - FRIAR TUCK’S - FAST food outlet Friar Tuck’s in Banbridge has been nominated in the coffee shop and takeaway category of the Good Food Award in the Leader’s 2012 Business Awards. The Bridge Street premises opened in 1990 and was the third outlet in the popular Friar Tuck chain to open in Northern Ireland. Renowned for its quality chicken burgers and wraps, the restaurant is popular both as a takeaway and sit-in eaterie for those who want good food but don’t want to wait. Upstairs seating is available where customers can sit down and relax in a clean, modern, eating area overlooking the main street.

FOODB 05 - TOP NOTCH - Ann Linton from the Banbridge Enterprise Centre-based restaurant was delighted to learn that Top Notch had been nominated. “All our food is produced from good, homemade cooking and I guess that’s why we are so popular as everyone enjoys that.We have good, friendly staff and all our food is reasonably priced,” she said.

FOODB 06 - BROWNE’S - FAMOUS for his chips for miles around, long established hot food takeaway Ronnie Brown’s traditional chip shop in Dromore has been nominated in the Good Food category of the Leader’s Business Awards 2012.

Selling a range of good quality takeaway food, the popular takeaway in Market Square has built up an enviable reputation over the years.

The business boasts a loyal customer base and also attracts substantial passing trade from visitors who want a tasty bite while on the move.

Fish, chicken and a range of burgers are regular best sellers, with many local fans enjoying a traditional ‘fish supper’ as a weekend treat.

FOODB 07 - DOMINO’S - Domino Pizza is the second largest pizza chain in the United States and opened its inaugural UK store in 1985, with the first Irish outlet launching in 1991.

Banbridge welcomed a new branch in September last year and locals, it seems, can’t get enough of the popular brand, voting the pizza makers to the shortlist of our Good Food Awards to be announced next month.

There are now 660 Domino Pizza stores in towns and cities across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with customers enjoying an innovative range of bases and toppings, all delivered piping hot straight from the oven to your front door.
