Welcome tax boost for film makers

The Chancellor’s announcement that high end TV dramas made in Northern Ireland will benefit from new UK tax incentives in the Budget has been welcomed by First Minister Peter Robinson and the deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

Speaking today during a tour of Bombardier Aerospace’s prestigious Global Completion Centre in Montreal, Mr Robinson said: “The announcement that Corporation Tax reliefs will be available to this important sector is excellent news for our economy and the result of our persistent lobbying. Government has listened and has recognised the potential contribution that the film industry can make to the economy.

“The Province has already been playing host to a number of projects including HBO’s award-winning ‘Game of Thrones’. This work has created jobs and generated income for Northern Ireland and now we can plan for the expansion of the industry. The additional announcement of £13.7million for the extension of the Wi-Fi network in Belfast is meanwhile an excellent technological enhancement for business users.”

Mr McGuinness said that the announcement was coming at a perfect time: “We have been very aware of this important niche market thanks to the work of NI Screen and others and we are delighted that the Westminster Government has responded to the case we have been making.

“The news comes at an important time when we are selling our skills to the world. Now we have another incentive to offer potential investors and another reason to persuade them to come here. This, together with the Wi-Fi funding, is happening at just the right moment and we will use every opportunity to press home the advantage.”
