Ballymena Legends podcast now available

Ballymena’s popular Myths and Legends exhibition is set to be given a modern twist in the form of a free podcast. The podcast, which can be downloaded and then listened to on an MP3 player or phone, has been developed and launched by the Borough Council.

Originally, the Myths and Legends tour was run as a pilot scheme at the Mid Antrim Museum in the Braid Centre. After proving to be a hit, the Council has decided to make the tour available in MP3 format in order to meet the needs of more technologically-savvy visitors who have come to expect a higher level of service.

By offering the podcast for download, it is hoped that this will enable a superb level of interactivity, which is bolstered by a range of media including short films, in order to create a unique and exciting experience for visitors which will stimulate the imagination, guide visitors and help to create a truly immersive and engaging experience.

Ballymena Mayor Hubert McNicholls said: “Ballymena is the heart of Northern Ireland and indeed is the Gateway to the Glens. There are many delights awaiting the visitor to the Borough and the area offers a vast range of events, activities and things to do.

“Tourism is very important to the local economy and any efforts we can make to encourage visitors to the area and indeed get them to stay longer helps the economy. This is an excellent product which allows visitors to the area to enjoy their visit, providing them with the opportunity to self-guide through the use of modern technology.”

The tour is comprised of a variety of legends and stories, recounting strange tales of bygone days. Visitors were introduced to some of Mid-Ulster’s most legendary sites and characters such as Lady Isobel Shaw of Ballygally Castle, the Coach Road travelled by a family of reckless highwaymen who preyed on hapless travellers at Glenwhirry, the Legend of the Headless Horseman, Squire O’Hara of Crebilly and the wicked Dr Colville of Galgorm Castle.

The project was part funded by the Rural Development Scheme and both the podcast and accompanying map are available to download for free at www.gatewaytotheglens.com
