Brush strokes at Christie!

DH Christie Memorial Primary School in Coleraine is in the running to win £1,000 in a national competition - and is seeking votes from the local community.

In June, the Ballycairn Road school received a generous paint donation from the Dulux Let’s Colour project and transformed its look by painting a host of murals, which included a castle, pirate ship, animals and a sunset.

Dulux chose DH Christie’s artwork to feature in the competition because it brought colour to people’s lives – but now it’s up to people in Coleraine to help it scoop the top prize to further improve the premises.

Project leader, principal Peter Henry, who originally applied for the paint donation online, said: “We couldn’t believe it when we heard Dulux had selected our murals for the competition.

“The donated paint helped us to transform our site, but there’s still so much we want to do to improve our facilities for our pupils.

That’s why we really want everyone to get online and vote for us!”

The school’s artwork was created using paint donated by Dulux Decorator Centre in Londonderry.

Classroom assistant, Dean McCarter, volunteered to create two vivid murals on the structures to explore various topics studied by the children in class.

The first shows two red silhouettes of children who have broken through a wall to see a magical world with a castle, a pirate ship and friendly animals under a huge yellow and orange sun.

The second depicts green, red and blue silhouettes of people playing football against a vibrant sunset, to showcase the school’s sporting passion.

Mr Henry said: “Our new murals provide a stimulating play environment for all our pupils and everyone who comes to our after school clubs.

“We’ve also had train passengers contacting the school to congratulate us on the artwork – as they see it every day as they pass by. It’s wonderful to think that Dean’s hard work will bring smiles to hundreds, maybe even thousands, of people’s faces.”

The top projects in each of three different categories are going head-to-head on Facebook, where members of the public can vote for their favourite.

To support the school visit the Dulux UK Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dulux/app_448952861833126 and hit ‘Vote’ before Friday, October 31.
