Carnalbanagh school’s ‘important role in community’ emphasised with visiting Education Minister

Education Minister Peter Weir today (Wednesday) visited a small rural primary school in the Glens of Antrim faced with closure.

Mr Weir was welcomed to Carnalbanagh, where residents are campaigning against an Education Authority recommendation to shut the school in summer 2021.

Political representatives, governors and PTA members were in attendance too as Mr Weir learned more about life at Carnalbanagh Primary School.

In a statement, Carnalbanagh PS said: “It was an excellent opportunity to lay our case before Mr Weir and show him how important our school is and the role that our school plays in the community.

“He was very interested to meet the children and hear what we had to say.”

Established in 1897, the school prides itself on providing high quality education.

Earlier this year pupils came up trumps in the online Sumdog Competition, a national numeracy challenge. The school, drawing from an enrolment of 25 children, emerged victorious in the event which attracted almost 6,000 entries across the UK. Read more here
