Children benefit from Wind Farm visit

RES and Action Renewables have treated local school groups from Rasharkin Primary School to a free open day at local wind farm Gruig, which is just outside Loughiel.

The visits were aimed at improving student awareness of sustainable energy and renewable energy technologies in line with new curriculum requirements.

Rasharkin was given a one hour tour of the wind farm and each visit was tailored for the school group and their individual needs. The visits were hosted by Laura Coey from Action Renewables, who, along with RES wind farm engineers and project managers, were on hand to speak to the teachers and their students.

The visits were designed to integrate sustainable development into education and help pupils develop an understanding of the challenges, impacts and responsibilities of making lifestyle choices that reduce our environmental impact. With a range of activities, including science based tours, experiments and even getting to look inside a wind turbine, it was an experience that was both fun and educational.

Commenting on the local schools programme Jennifer McCorry, Project Manager, RES said: “The children really enjoyed seeing the wind turbines up close and we were very encouraged by the interest they showed in the environment and their awareness of how the lifestyle choices we all make impact on our natural resources and the quality of our environment. The feedback we received from the teachers was very positive about how the programme stimulated the children and underpinned their curriculum-based course work”.

Michael Doran, director, Action Renewables commented: “We were delighted to work with our Association member RES and assist schools on these exciting visits. It is vital that children learn about renewables throughout their education and this kind of opportunity gives both pupils and teachers an opportunity to examine topics from the curriculum while onsite. Action Renewables also offers free support and teaching materials on wind energy from the dedicated education website www.wiseuptorenewables.com”.

Ruth Howe from Rasharkin PS commented: “It was a very enjoyable visit and the children loved getting inside the turbine. Working with mathematical formula made a good connection with previous work in the classroom and the visit emphasised the importance of renewable energy”.
