A Contingency Planning statement, issued by all the schools’ principals, was released to parents this afternoon (Wednesday).

It said: “The Dickson Plan principals, in consultation with their governor, have agreed steps to safeguard the transfer process in the best interests of all our young people.

“We are also mindful of the well-being of our families and wider community in these uncertain and unprecedented times.

“Given the evolving context, current attendance rates and potential for a protracted period of school closure, the transfer examinations will not take place in any of the Junior High Schools.

“Arrangements will be in place to ensure that no young person is disadvantaged. It has been agreed that academic evidence from Years 9 and 10 will be used to inform the transfer process. We trust that this gives you some reassurance at this time.”

It is understood pupils at Clounagh, Killicomaine, Tandragee and Lurgan Junior Highs usually sit transfer exams in March to decide if they’re going to Portadown College, Lurgan College or Craigavon Senior High.

It affects around 1,000 pupils and around 200 in year 10 in each of the four feeder schools.

It appears pupils will be ranked on the basis of June 2019 and Dec 2019 exam results. An average will take of both results.

It’s basically what is done when a pupil is ill and can’t sit exams but it has never been done for an entire year group.”
