Dromore Youth For Christ getting ready to move to new ‘Base’

Dromore YfC has been a part of the community in Dromore since 1996, serving the needs of young people from across the town regardless of background or religion.

In those 24 years, Dromore YfC has been located in a number of different venues throughout the town, but for the last eight years Dromore YfC’s Youth Centre - known locally as ‘The Base’ - has been above Martin’s Paint shop on Church Street.

Centre Co-ordinator, Joshua Thornbury, said: “In May, the Board became aware that a building space had become available. This was a wonderful opportunity for Dromore YfC, as it presented us with a ground floor building, one that was on the street front and the unique position that it was ready for extensive refurbishment. This is a fantastic position for any organisation to be in and one that we are incredibly excited about, as this will mean that we can put our own stamp on the building and shape it to fit the needs of our young people and our organisation for years to come.

“There needs to be the creation of an office space and a small group work room, this will enable the staff and volunteers to plan programmes in the office space and then the small group work room can be a multi-purpose room acting as a prayer space, a place to deliver youth work programmes and a space for board meetings. Then there is the fitting out of the building to create an attractive youth space for young people so that they can feel at home and call it their own. There is the need for the installation of a kitchen and some work required to the toilets.

“All of this will enable us to deliver programmes which can be about developing life skills for young people and encouraging them in independent living.”

“This new building has lots of potential for us as an organisation and for those in the town of Dromore, enabling a space to be created that caters for the needs of all of the young people of our town. This will allow us to plan into the future for the delivery of youth work programmes that create opportunities for young people to develop their skills, achieve accreditation, enhance their CVs as volunteers and have fun.”
