Greenshed project going from strength to strength

The Greenshed garden centre is based at the former Roe Valley Hospital. The project is a partnership between local Charity LCDI and Benbradagh Resource Centre

The concept is to provide work opportunity for adults with a learning disability. The Lads from Benbradagh work in the Garden Centre five days each week and the ‘not for profit’ facility is open to the public.

The Friday stall was introduced last year and has proved very successful. LCDI’s Alistair Stewart says “the stall is fantastic; it gives the chaps an opportunity to meet with the public and show them the fantastic work that we do”

The Greenshed team grow all of the plants on site and their bedding plant stock is ready to hit the shelves. The project also fills and sells window boxes and hanging baskets to order. Alistair explained that in addition to the growing and selling of plants the team has developed other associated interests. During the winter months the Workshop was literally buzzing to the sound of window boxes and bird-tables being manufactured. As well as growing plants, the centre has developed its own allotment for the growing of organic vegetables and herbs. The centre still provides a gardening service for older people.

Alistair says that the team have a very busy season ahead of them, but they are all ‘chomping at the bit’ to get going. The Friday stall will be at the hospital carpark from 10.00am to 1.00pm every Friday for the rest of the season and the garden Centre is open mon – fri. Check us out at www.lcdi.co.uk
