Mickey and co drop into Donard as fundraising gets underway

TWO special visitors lit up the faces of pupils at Donard School recently as preparations for next year’s trip to Disneyland get well and truly underway.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse took time out from their hectic schedules to enjoy a French-themed breakfast with the some of the children who will soon join them in Paris.

The Leader is proud to be supporting pupils, staff and parents in their bid to take around 30 children to Disneyland for the trip of a lifetime next May. In October two pence from the sale of every copy of the Leader will be donated to Donard’s Disney fund.

Hoping to reach a target of at least £1,000 through a mile-long 2p collection, school principal Edel Lavery said things have got off to a great start with around £400 raised so far.

Leader Editor John Hooks said the newspaper is proud to be able to help out. “Donard is a wonderful school and always deserving of everyone’s help and support,” said John.

“Collecting a mile of 2p coins is a brilliant idea so we are more than happy to be able to donate two pence from the sale of every Leader in October to the cause.

Earlier this month pupils and teachers enjoyed croissants, crepes, french toast and a whole host of other delicious french cuisine to prepare their palettes for the trip.

And in the course of the next few months many more activities will take place including a quiz, cinema night, and fashion show to help reach the £12,000 target.

Singer Peter Corry has even pledged to lend a hand by performing a concert early next year.

Mrs Lavery said the help is coming in thick and fast and is very much appreciated.

“Recently we had a very kind and generous donation from a group of people who attended a birthday party in Dromore and made a donation of £1,000 in lieu of presents,” said Mrs Lavery. “Things like that are so kind and so much appreciated. And to get a call from Peter Corry saying he is willing to help out is just great.
